GPRS is evil because it's really quite usable. When I've been connected to the net via my mobile in the past when out and about, it's always been using GSM. 9600bps or at most 14400bps does feel incredibly slow to access today's internet.

I actually got on line over 10 years ago using 2400bps but everyone else was using something similar, there was no world wide web and data transfers were appropriate for that speed. Now-a-days every one has at least a 56Kbps modem and many have broadband. The 'net has adjusted and the amount of data being transfered is appropriate for those speeds. I suppose it's Moore's Law or a variation of Parkinson's Law (people adjust to live in the space they have available).

My latest mobile has GPRS which means you get speeds like 56Kbps. It makes the 'net very usable even in this day and age. The down side is you pay for the amount of data transfered not the time connected. This means that some things like IRCing are actually not too bad. It's near enough plain text at a fairly slow rate. But web pages are bad, you really don't realise how much your total data transfer is increasing by. You don't know that you are using it because there's not really much lag. My mobile bill for this month is going to be huge.

I'm also thinking about changing my phone again when the year is up. My partner's phone is really on it's last legs. It's basically the best bits of her phone and mine. We both got Ericsson SH888s a few years ago and gradually bits failed. Last year I went and got a new contract and a T68i when my finally gave up the ghost and we refurbished her phone using bits of it. Now her's is giving up the ghost so my intention is to give her my current phone (as she's currently not working) and get myself a SonyEricsson T610.

Now I've never changed my phone this close to taking out a contract. Am I right in thinking that once the year is up I can just cancel the contract and get a new one and a new phone. I don't have to hand back the current phone or anything? Or would it be better to just buy a new handset and retain our current contracts. Any comments would be appreciated.
