I've been completely without piercings for years, but I've been considering getting my tongue done. I don't know though - I'm a bit squeamish about that.
The people I know who had their tongues done said that they were on soup and baby food, and talking fairly unintelligably, for a week. They don't seem to have any problems now (except for occasionally swallowing a tongue bar when it unscrews that is!).
I don't know how much it hurts. It's the same with having nipple piercings it's the pain that I'm not sure about. People have said that even ear piercings hurt but I think I must have quite a high pain threshold as I never felt a think when my ears were done. My nose was done after half and hour of an application of topical anaesthetic and that was just sore. I suppose with locals no piercings would hurt. I think you'd have to ask some who's had their tongue done how much it would hurt.
