[livejournal.com profile] lis0r pointed me to the York University folk law page...

"In 1988 when there was a Real Fire(TM), the fire brigade had trouble trying to persuade the spods in vuft from leaving their computers."

Erm... /me looks embarrassed!

There also seems to be the regular naming of a couple of people on my friends list. :-)

Ah yes. That was when Nicola Hiley (very posh; was the only person I knew who dressed for dinner in Vanbrugh snackbar...) or a friend of hers put a mince pie in a microwave, leaving the foil tray on...

It was my final year and I was living in top floor Vanbrugh C block. I can't remember exactly how I wangled the CompSci logon as I actually studied Physics but I seemed to spend most of my time shared between computing services and there when I should have been attending lectures or studying. I ran a BBS like system on the VAXen which I bequeathed to a guy in Chemistry when I left.

Back then I was my alter-ego and was a large hairy creature, usually wearing some kind of metal band t-shirt and shades. I was voted person most likely to become a psycho in a JCR poll. I was also a little mad at the time. I genuinely did try and fake appendicitis in order to delay finals after a panic attack. It didn't get me anything other than a finger up my bum.

> a finger up my bum

There's campus Tories who would've paid good money for that ;P

Ah, this may have been *another* fire then ;)

When I mean there I mean vuft. That hole downstairs in Vanrbugh.

Vanbrugh seemed to have fire alarms once a week. I also remember watching the police arrive at Langwith, supposedly looking for drugs, whilst smoking something elicit out of my bedroom window.

I was pretty close to Central Hall and just before my finals there was some kind of youth brass band competition held there. They were practising all week. There was one band which just played the Monty Python theme over and over again. I responded by playing Black Sabbath loudly out of the window but got a bollocking for it.

Hmm... How do they cope with the smoking ban?

Was this in your final year? I think I *ahem* may be aware of precisely the raid you are discussing. As may [livejournal.com profile] minusbat ;-)

Yes it would have been my final year my room was on the outside of Vanbrugh looking over towards Langwith.

I think I missed the fire. I do recall spending *cough* large amounts of time in V/058 though. Mostly late at night. The machines were *far* too slow to spend time in there during daylight hours! :-)

I do recall one *very* odd experience with the cleaners. After a long night hacking code, I was feeling a little, er, 'logical' A cleaner appeared at about 08:00. "You shouldn't be in here before 09:00" she declared. I tried to explain to her the room was available 24/7, and so she would have to sharpen her parameters somewhat. Before 09:00 was no good, because, in a way, it was *always* before 09:00 in V/058. She grumbled and emptied some bins.

A couple of other bits of trivia:

V/058 stopped being a computer science room in 1997 and turned into a computing services room. I have the last piece of printout from the printer in that room - the last page simply says "lpcredit".

Since they redid Vanbrugh again last year, the computer facilities have all been rearranged.

Also, I notice this in the folklore:

"The SGIs in Derwent have had their speakers removed. This was due to people playing sampled sounds at full volume while other people were trying to work."

What this fails to mention is people playing samples sounds at full volume _on other people's computers_ while said people were trying to work.

(Hmm, I wonder who 'people' could have been...)
